MR 5.A Ascension and Pentecost

Responding to Acts 2:36-41

In this scripture, what is is taking place is Peter is explaining to the apostles and to everyone that they need to save themselves from the "corrupt generation" they are living in. Peter says, "Peter [said] to them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will recieve the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts). This closely relates with what we are talking about now because Peter says that we wil recieve the gift of the Holy Spirit, and in order to fully recieve the redemptive grace and power of Jesus we need the Holy Spirit. By reading this scripture we can see that the early church took baptism very seriously and literally. The people of Jesus' time believed that all of their sins would be wiped away and they would save themselves from the corrupt generation they were living in. Lastly, this scripture shows us how Jesus wanted us to recieve the Holy Spirit. For about 40 days, Jesus prepared us for the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, and we see the Holy Spirit being referred to here.
